Process & recovery

Most facial aesthetic procedures are carried out under general anaesthetic, though some — otoplasty, for example — may be performed under local anaesthetic with sedation. Operating times generally range from one to four hours depending on the procedure, and a hospital stay of one night is common. Swelling and bruising are most noticeable in the first one to two weeks, most people feel comfortable in public within two to three weeks, and the final result settles gradually over several months — up to a year for rhinoplasty. As with any surgery, risks include infection, bleeding, scarring, asymmetry, numbness and anaesthetic complications, and occasionally revision surgery — all discussed openly before you decide.

Choosing between the procedures

Facial aesthetics covers a family of operations rather than a single procedure, and the right choice depends on what specifically bothers you. Broadly speaking: rhinoplasty reshapes the nose; a facelift addresses sagging in the lower face and jowls; a neck lift tightens loose skin and banding beneath the chin; a brow lift raises a heavy or descended brow; otoplasty repositions prominent ears; and chin or cheek augmentation adds structure to a profile that feels under-projected. Some concerns overlap — heaviness around the eyes, for instance, may be better addressed with eyelid surgery than a brow lift — and the treating surgeon will tell you honestly which applies to you.

Recovery and aftercare in general terms

Most facial procedures follow a similar recovery arc. Expect swelling and bruising to peak in the first few days and settle largely over two to three weeks, during which you will usually be advised to sleep with your head elevated, avoid bending and strenuous exercise, and protect healing incisions from the sun. A feeling of tightness or numbness in the treated area is common and usually eases over weeks to months. Because facial tissues heal gradually, results continue to refine long after the visible bruising has gone — rhinoplasty in particular can take up to a year for the last of the swelling at the nasal tip to resolve. Before you fly home, the treating surgeon reviews your wounds and removes any splints or stitches that need removing, and after your return to the UK the aftercare team stays in touch remotely as your result settles.

Surgery is not always the answer

For early or mild changes — fine lines, some loss of volume, uneven skin texture — non-surgical skin rejuvenation treatments such as anti-wrinkle injections, dermal fillers or laser resurfacing may achieve enough on their own, with far less downtime. What they cannot do is lift significantly sagging tissue or reshape cartilage and bone; that is where facial aesthetic surgery earns its place. An honest assessment will sometimes recommend against an operation, suggest a smaller procedure than you expected, or propose starting with a non-surgical step first — and if that is the treating surgeon’s view, it is exactly what we will tell you.
